NEW YORK — First-year Elva Yu (Spring, Texas) of the Pratt Institute women's tennis team was selected as the City University of New York Athletic Conference (CUNYAC) Women's Tennis Rookie of the Week, the league office announced Tuesday.
The award marks the second consecutive Rookie of the Week selection for Yu, who also claimed the honor on Oct. 13. Senior Beatrice Crespo (Kearny, N.J.) was also recognized in the weekly report, earning an honorable mention for CUNYAC Player of the Week.
Yu went undefeated in singles action across two conference matches, dropping just two total games in four sets at the No. 5 flight as Pratt secured the CUNYAC regular-season championship and the No. 1 seed for the conference tournament.
On Friday, Yu opened with a 6-0 shutout at No. 3 doubles alongside sophomore Sophia Schafler (West Palm Beach, Fla.) to help Pratt secure the doubles point in an eventual 6-1 victory over Baruch College. Yu followed on court five with a 6-0, 6-0 shutout.
Two days later against Hunter College on Sunday, Yu delivered the final point in a 4-3 title-clinching triumph over the previously unbeaten Hawks. Yu finalized the regular season title with a 6-1, 6-1 straight-set victory at No. 5 singles.
With the two victories, Yu improved to 6-0 in dual-match singles play this season, having won every match in straight sets.
Crespo picked up an honorable mention nod after posting a 3-0 record at No. 2 singles and a 2-1 mark at No. 1 doubles during the week. The senior clinched the team match against Baruch with a 6-2, 6-2 singles win and added a 6-1 doubles victory and a 6-2, 6-3 singles win in the 4-3 decision over Hunter.
Pratt returns to action on Tuesday, Oct. 27, in the semifinal round of the 2026 CUNYAC Women's Tennis Championship. The top-seeded Cannoneers meet No. 4-seeded Lehman College at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center with a start time to be announced.
