Women’s Tennis Sweeps Albertus Magnus in CUNYAC Opener

NEW YORK — The Pratt Institute women's tennis team opened its conference schedule with a 7-0 victory over Albertus Magnus College on Sunday afternoon at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center.

Pratt (3-0, 1-0 CUNYAC) captured all seven team points, recording four separate 6-0, 6-0 singles shutouts and conceding just 13 total games on the afternoon. 

The Cannoneers secured the doubles point with three straight court victories. Judith Song (Sharon, Mass.) and Olivia Tao (Ann Arbor, Mich.) finished first with a 6-0 win at No. 2 doubles. Seniors Pallavi Verghese (Fayetteville, Ark.) and Beatrice Crespo (Kearny, N.J.) followed with a 6-0 shutout at the top flight. First-year Elva Yu (Spring, Texas) and sophomore Quinn Steinman (Greendale, Wis.) completed the doubles sweep on court three with a 6-1 triumph in the No. 3 slot..

Pratt maintained full control as singles play got underway, taking the first three completed courts in straight-set shutouts. Crespo opened the scoring on court two with a 6-0, 6-0 win and Song matched that result at No. 3 singles with a 6-0, 6-0 victory.

Tao clinched the match for the Cannoneers at No. 4 singles with a 6-0, 6-0 sweep. Yu added a fourth 6-0, 6-0 victory on the day at No. 5 singles. 

Verghese prevailed in a tightly contested top-flight match. Facing Madison Rossetti at No. 1 singles, Verghese dropped the opening set 6-4 before answering with a 7-5 win in the second. In the deciding 10-point match tiebreak, Verghese secured a 12-10 victory to complete the comeback.

Steinman closed out the match at No. 6 singles, earning a 6-1, 6-0 win over Silva to finalize the sweep.

Pratt returns to action on Friday, October 9, traveling to borough foe Brooklyn College in a CUNYAC match scheduled for 2:30 p.m.
