Men's Volleyball Sweeps Medgar Evers For Second Straight Win

BROOKLYN, N.Y. — The Pratt Institute men's volleyball team delivered a masterful performance from the service line, overwhelming Medgar Evers College in a 3-0 sweep (25-7, 25-10, 25-15) on Saturday afternoon at the Activities Resource Center.

With the victory, Pratt (4-7) has won two straight matches, while Medgar Evers (0-6) continues its search for its first win.

The Cannoneers were nearly unstoppable from the service line, finishing with an incredible 26 aces as a team. Senior Max Wang (Shenzhen, China) led the charge with aces to go with five kills and a team-best seven digs. Griffin Benkovszky (Ashland, Va.) also finished with five kills and served up four aces.

Matthew Zhang (Guangzhou, China) was also brilliant from the line, landing six aces while splitting setting duties and dishing out 11 assists. Arturo Mata (Chicago, Ill.) added four aces and three kills. Nathan Kim (Irvine, Calif.) quarterbacked the offense with 12 assists and added four kills and and ace.

The tone was set in the opening frame when a 10-point service run by Mata, which included five aces, broke the set wide open. The Cannoneers continued their serving dominance throughout the match, using long runs from Zhang in the second set and Wang in the third to cruise to the non-conference victory.

The offense was also highly efficient, with Brooks Reid (Winston Salem, N.C.) and Mohit Kariea (Pune, India) combining for six kills on nine attempts without an error.

The Cougars were led by two aces each from Kimahli Reid and Matthew Fleming. Ahmed Toure recorded the team's lone kill.

The Cannoneers return to the ARC for their next United East contest on Tuesday, March 3, hosting Saint Elizabeth University. The match is set for a 7 p.m. start.
