Women's Volleyball Outlasts Mount Saint Vincent in Five-Set Thriller

BROOKLYN, N.Y. — The Pratt Institute women's volleyball team held off the University of Mount Saint Vincent in five sets Thursday night, taking a 25-19, 25-17, 21-25, 14-25, 15-7 victory at the Pratt Activity Resource Center.

Pratt (2-3) seized control early, opening the match on a 6-0 run behind the serving of Zoe Broerman (Cincinnati, Ohio), who recorded two aces during the spurt. Alison Sontag (Manhasset, N.Y.) later served three consecutive aces to widen the cushion to 24-16 before the Cannoneers closed out the 25-19 opener.

In the second set, Mount Saint Vincent (2-6) built an early 7-2 advantage, but Pratt answered with a blistering offensive frame, hitting .520 with 15 kills against two errors. A six-point service run by Kathryn Quintiliano (Manassas, Va.) pushed Pratt ahead for good on the way to a 25-17 win.

The Dolphins answered by claiming the next two frames to force a decider. Mount Saint Vincent jumped to a 5-0 lead in the third set; kills from Russell and a block by Sontag helped Pratt pull within 14-13, but the Dolphins held on for a 25-21 decision. Mount Saint Vincent then carried play in the fourth set, using an 8-1 surge to build an 18-10 advantage and coasting to a 25-14 win.

Pratt reset quickly in the fifth set, hitting .320 with 10 kills. Ahead 5-3, Russell served three straight points, including an ace and a kill from Jamie Shoemake (La Crescenta, Calif.), to open an 8-3 cushion. Joanna Doyle (Warren, N.H.) added a late kill before Russell hammered down the final point to seal the match, 15-7.

Russell finished with a match-high 18 kills and collected 10 digs for a double-double. Kelsy Padilla (Brooklyn, N.Y.) also registered a double-double with 11 kills and 11 digs. Emma Hwang (Dallas, Texas) orchestrated the offense with 22 assists while adding nine kills and six service aces, and Broerman anchored the back row with 13 digs and four aces.

The Cannoneers totaled season highs of 52 kills and 17 service aces, while collecting 56 digs in their first victory over UMSV in six meetings dating back to 2014 — three of the six going to five sets. Mount Saint Vincent finished with 31 kills and eight total blocks.

Anna Nolasco paced the Dolphins with eight kills and 10 digs, while Evelyn Starns contributed seven kills. Stephanie Rodriguez handed out 14 assists for Mount Saint Vincent.

Pratt returns to action on Saturday, September 19 traveling to the Bronx for a tri-match hosted by SUNY Maritime College. The Cannoneers face the host Privateers at 11 a.m. before squaring off with York College at 1 p.m.
