Box Score GENEVA, N.Y. – First-years Pallavi Verghese and Beatrice Crespo represented the Pratt Institute women's tennis team as they competed in the 2023 Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Women's Northeast Regional Championship hosted by William Smith College.
In the first-ever appearance by the Cannoneers in the tournament, Verghese upset a top 16 seed in the opening round. The first-year collected her fourth straight singles win to open her collegiate career defeating Chara Meidani of Union College in a third-set super-tiebreaker, 6-3, 4-6, 1-0 (10-8). Verghese fell in the round of 32 to Hannah Walpole of Hamilton College in straight sets, 6-2, 6-0, suffering her first defeat of the season.
Crespo also took her first loss of the season in the opening round with a 6-1, 6-0 setback to Ariane Karera of St. Lawrence University. Both Walpole and Karera have advanced to the round of 16 in the singles draw with the tournament continuing through Monday.
Verghese and Crespo couldn't bypass top 8-seeded Konika Dhull and Grace Truong of Skidmore College in the doubles draw, falling 8-1 in the first round.
Pratt (3-0) resumes duals play hosting Hunter College this Sunday, October 1 at the USTA National Tennis Center starting at 12:30 p.m.
