FLUSHING, N.Y. — The Pratt Institute women's tennis team closed its fall schedule with a 7-0 sweep of Brooklyn College on Thursday night at the USTA National Tennis Center in Flushing, N.Y., improving to 5-0.
The Cannoneers set the tone in doubles with a clean sweep. Satoka Shibasaki (Tokyo, Japan) and first-year Quinn Steinman (Greendale, Wis.) rolled 6-1 at No. 2, and the new pairing of Victoria Hatala (Brooklyn, N.Y.) and Dina Zhao (Beijing, China) matched that 6-1 score on court three. At the top spot, Pallavi Verghese (Fayetteville, Ark.) and Beatrice Crespo (Kearny, N.J.) prevailed, 6-3.
Pratt carried that momentum into singles. Crespo raced through No. 2 singles, 6-2, 6-1, and Verghese was efficient at the top line, 6-0, 6-2. Hatala won her fall singles debut at No. 5, 6-2, 6-1, and Zhao added a straight-sets result at No. 6, 6-2, 6-3.
Two tight courts showcased the Cannoneers' late-set composure. Shibasaki edged the first set in a tiebreaker and finished 7-6 (2), 6-2 at No. 3, while Steinman closed a sweep with a 6-0, 7-6 (6) win at No. 4.
Crespo and Shibasaki capped the fall a perfect 5-0 in singles, and the Cannoneers dropped just two singles matches across five duals. Pratt also posted three 7-0 sweeps during the stretch and finished 3-0 at the USTA National Tennis Center.
Pratt carries a five-match win streak into the spring season as they look to defend their Atlantic East Conference title.
