Men's Volleyball Stumbles on the Road to Manhattanville

PURCHASE, N.Y. — The Pratt Institute men's volleyball team fell to Manhattanville University in straight sets, 3-0 (25-13, 25-10, 25-15), in a non-conference road match on Thursday evening at Kennedy Gymnasium.

Pratt (1-3) battled in its first road contest of the season, while Manhattanville (1-3) picked up its first victory with a strong performance from the service line.

Morvens Regis (Brooklyn, N.Y.) and Arturo Mata (Chicago, Ill.) led the black-and-gold with five kills apiece. Regis was also a factor at the net, recording two blocks (one solo). Griffin Benkovszky (Ashland, Va.) contributed four kills and four digs.

Making his first collegiate start, first-year setter Matthew Hang (Guangzhou, China) orchestrated the offense and finished with 13 assists. Raymond Liang (Queens, N.Y.) anchored the back row with a team-high six digs.

The Valiants used an 11-2 run midway through the opening set to take control. In the second frame, the hosts relied on aggressive serving, landing seven of their 11 total aces to secure the set. The Cannoneers showed their fight in the third, putting together a 4-0 run to pull within 14-10, but could not extend the match.

Manhattanville was powered by an impressive performance from Joe Gandarillas, who recorded 10 kills and six service aces. Justin Lau added five aces for the Valiants.

The Cannoneers return to the ARC on Friday, Feb. 6, to host CCNY. The match is scheduled for a 7 p.m. first serve.
