ARLINGTON, Va. — The Pratt Institute men's tennis team earned notable individual wins but saw their three-match winning streak halted in a 5-2 defeat to Marymount University on Saturday afternoon at Virginia Highlands Park.
The Cannoneers, chosen as preseason favorites ahead of the defending Atlantic East champion Saints, dropped to 5-5 overall and 1-1 in league competition. Marymount improved to 4-9 overall and 1-0 in conference play.
Pratt secured an early positive result at first doubles, as Justin Urbi and Mikah Liu paired up for an impressive 6-3 victory, but the Saints took the No. 2 and No. 3 matches for the doubles point.
Liu maintained his momentum in singles competition to go undefeated on the day, cruising in straight sets at the No. 2 position, 6-3, 6-2. Nathan Park also earned a victory, battling to a straight-sets triumph at No. 4 singles, 6-3, 7-6 (3).
Urbi played a hard-fought match in the lead singles match, forcing a third set before falling in a supertiebreaker 6-3, 2-6, 1-0 (10-4).
The Cannoneers take a brief hiatus from conference play this week, traveling to Jamaica, N.Y., to face York College in a non-league matchup on Tuesday, April 1.
